The school currently has 8 classes and the Nursery. All classes are mixed ability classes
All children follow the 2014 National Curriculum with the four core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Computing and a further 7 foundation subjects – History, Geography, Design + Technology, Art, Music, Physical Education and Personal, Social Health Education. Religious Education is taught in line with the Derbyshire agreed syllabus.
All children receive an hour of Literacy and Numeracy teaching every day which, as much as possible, is incorporated into the Cornerstone Curriculum.
At Grassmoor we firmly believe that children learn most effectively when they are actively engaged in stimulating first hand experiences and to achieve this we teach a creative curriculum provided by Cornerstone.
The children choose what they would like to learn from a range of topics, the teacher brings these alive through frequent educational visits, inspiring activities and parent celebrations. The core Literacy and Numeracy skills are first taught and then applied and embedded through this cross curricular approach.
Special events are also organised such as Sports Week, Wow Science afternoons and the Grassmoor Oscars to further enrich the curriculum.
We use our school grounds fully, including the allotment, orchard, extensive field with a newly planted wood and numerous different environments within our school site to enhance the learning. We also take full advantage of the local nature reserves and Grassmoor Country Park which are all within walking distance.
Reading has enormous priority as it is the gateway to learning for knowledge and pleasure.
We teach synthetic phonics through Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.
In Nursery and Reception this involves whole class teaching of listening skills through song and play that encourages the children to hear, say and copy letters and words. Last year we followed a programme of Tuning into Words lead by specialist music providers from Derbyshire Local Authority. The children enjoyed singing, dancing and playing music but more importantly it significantly accelerated the children’s ability to sit, listen and follow instructions from a much earlier age.
From January in Reception through to the end of Year 2 the children are split into small groups and taught phonics every day at their own level to give them the skills they need to decode words for reading and writing.
In Key Stage 2 we continue to give small group support for any child who has not yet mastered the art of decoding words.
Our core reading scheme is Oxford Reading Tree. We have well stocked class libraries which we are continually updating and a comprehensive library with a full time librarian to support the children in finding books that they will enjoy within their ability level.
Throughout the school we teach the higher levels skills such as comprehension, deduction and inference through guided reading. We run daily reading clubs and enter reading challenges such as Fiction Express and Carnegie Medal. We have regular book fairs and fully immerse the children in events such as World Book Day and Roald Dahl Day. We have authors such as Bernie Doherty and Andy Cope run workshops with the children and endeavour to ensure that children genuinely want to read for pleasure.
The children and staff enjoy belonging to Grassmoor Primary School and as a result they make excellent progress. This is evident by the happy, positive buzz you feel as you move through the school and has been noted by the many people who support us including parents, teachers, authors, artists, PE specialists, gardeners, musicians to name but a few.
If you require further, detailed information on the curriculum please contact the class teacher in the first instance.
