Relationships & Sex Education
At Grassmoor Primary School, we understand that Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) can be a sensitive topic, and many parents have questions about what their children will learn. We want to ensure that you feel informed and supported, so this page provides useful links and resources to help you talk to your child about RSE. You’ll also find details on what we teach, why we teach it, and when we introduce different topics.
We recognize the importance of working together on this subject, which is why we have consulted with parents, staff, and school governors to develop a thoughtful, age-appropriate approach to RSE. More information can be found below.
What Schools Must Teach
All schools are required to teach about Relationships as part of the curriculum. Additionally, to support children’s well-being and safety, the government strongly advises that schools provide an age-appropriate Sex Education programme. You can read their official guidance here: [Alex, please add 'RSE_primary_schools_guide' link here].
Please note: Parents have the right to withdraw their child from Sex Education lessons. However, they cannot opt out of Relationship Education or Science lessons that cover puberty and reproduction.
Resources to Help You Talk to Your Child About RSE
We understand that discussing these topics with your child can feel challenging. Below are some helpful resources to support you in having open and age-appropriate conversations:
- BBC ‘Operation Ouch’ Video: A child-friendly introduction to Sex Education. We recommend that parents watch the video first to decide which sections to share. A transcript and chapter headings are available below the video to help guide your discussion.
- Talking Tips for Parents: Practical advice on approaching discussions about sex and relationships with your child. https://www.rsehub.org.uk/for-parentscarers/ten-tips-for-talking-to-your-child-about-sex-and-relationships/
For Parents of Children with SEND
- A helpful document specifically for parents and carers of children with SEND. [Alex, please add 'RSE leaflet for parents and carers' link here].
- A website and video resource offering additional guidance.
