SMILERS
At Grassmoor Primary School, we are committed to promoting positive mental health and wellbeing across our entire school community—including children, staff, parents, and carers. We understand that mental and emotional wellbeing are just as important as physical health in leading a balanced and fulfilling life. We also recognise that children’s mental health plays a vital role in their overall development, learning, and achievement.
As a school, we are excited to be part of Derbyshire County Council’s SMILERS initiative. It forms part of Grassmoor Primary School’s whole school approach to welling.
SMILERS is an acronym designed to help us all—adults and children alike—remember simple, everyday actions that can boost our mental wellbeing.
STAY CONNECTED - Having strong relationships with people—and even pets—can help you feel supported, valued, and happy.
MOVE - Being physically active helps release feel-good chemicals in your brain, boosting your mood and energy levels.
INTEREST - Exploring hobbies and learning new things keeps your brain engaged and helps you feel curious and motivated.
LOOK - Using your senses to notice the world around you helps you stay present and mindful in the moment.
EATING WELL - Enjoying a balanced diet supports your physical health and helps you feel your best, inside and out.
REST - Getting enough quality sleep helps improve your mood, memory, and overall mental wellbeing.
SUPPORT - Offering help and kindness to others can lift your spirits and make a positive difference in their lives too.
Positive mental health is a vital part of a child’s overall development. It is closely linked to physical health and plays a key role in their success at school, in future employment, and in life. Our mental and physical health influence how we think, feel, and behave—both inwardly and outwardly.
